Copper and Brass in Jewelry: Hammered, Patinated, Warm
The workhorse metals of the catalog — how hammering changes the light, why patina looks dimensional, and what happens as brass darkens with wear.
Copper and brass are what most of this catalog is actually made of, and they read differently from a cool metal on the body. Brass pushes yellow. Copper runs pink-red and picks up whatever pink is already in a complexion, which is why a copper cuff looks warmer on the wrist than it does on a table. Neither recedes the way silver tone can — warm metal always sits slightly forward of the skin it is against.
Both are alloys. Brass is copper and zinc, which is where its gold color comes from; bronze is copper and tin and runs browner. Hammering Changes How the Metal Reads
A flat polished surface gives one hard highlight and a lot of dead area around it.
