About Gemstone Jewelry

Here the stone leads and the setting follows. Some are rough-cut, with their natural shape left intact. Others are polished and bezel-set. Tourmaline, rainbow moonstone, onyx, malachite and Herkimer quartz each bring a color of their own.

Settings are sterling silver or gold-plated brass, made mostly in India, with a few pieces from Thailand and the USA. Natural stones vary, so yours will differ slightly from the photo.

Reading a stone

Rough-cut stones keep their crystal shape and vary most from piece to piece; polished stones are cut for color and light. Tourmaline ranges from pink to green in one crystal, rainbow moonstone flashes blue when it moves, Herkimer quartz is water-clear and naturally double-pointed. Settings are sterling silver or gold-plated brass, some with 18k micron plating.

Prices run from $64 to $425. Natural stones vary, so yours will differ slightly from the photograph.

Are the stones natural?

Yes, with one exception noted on its listing: a turquoise piece uses reconstituted turquoise, which is real turquoise ground and re-bonded. Every other stone is natural and uncut or cut, as described.

How do I care for gemstone jewelry?

Keep stones away from perfume, hairspray and hot water. Wipe with a soft dry cloth. Moonstone and tourmaline are hard enough for daily wear; store rough-cut pieces separately so their points do not scratch other jewelry.
