The turquoise chips are hand-sorted and hand-strung in small batches, so bead size, shape and hue vary naturally from piece to piece.

The Story

Turquoise and sterling silver became the material combination of Southwest jewelry in the mid-1800s, when Native silversmiths in the region began working silver into beads and settings for locally mined stone. The Kingman mine in Arizona, source of the stone used here, is one of the region's best-known deposits — clear blue-green with fine matrix veining.

This necklace draws on the graduated multi-strand beading style: rough chips strung tight enough that the stone itself becomes the design, gathered into stamped silver cone caps at the neck. The geometric tool work on the silver echoes stamped Southwest silversmithing.

Each piece starts with loose turquoise rough that is tumbled and sorted by color and size, then hand-drilled and strung bead by bead onto three strands cut to slightly different lengths so they cascade. The silver cones, rondelles and toggle are cut, stamped by hand and shaped before the strands are knotted into them.
