The Story

The aqua beads on this necklace come from a recycled-glass tradition in Ghana: used glass bottles are crushed to a fine powder, packed into hand-carved clay molds, and fired in a wood or charcoal kiln until the powder fuses back into a solid bead. The slightly bubbled texture and soft aqua tone are the direct signature of that process — impossible to fully standardize by machine.

The wood and bone spacers travel alongside the glass through bead trading networks that link inland carvers and coastal glassmakers across Ghana and Kenya. The brass medallion draws on a West African metalworking language, where hand-hammering and etching leave a flat brass disc textured and antiqued rather than mirror-bright.

The beads and medallion were then strung and finished into a necklace in the USA — a supply chain that treats each material honestly for what it is, rather than presenting the whole piece as a single-village artifact.
