Each bead is hand-formed and oxidized by hand, so small variations in the floret pattern and the depth of the darkening are normal.

The Story

The bead is built from dozens of small florets, each one a ring of granulated beading around a central dot, packed tight into a dome. Layering small repeated units into one dense, textured form is a signature of Hill Tribe silverwork, made by Karen silversmiths in the hill regions of northern Thailand.

The darkened background is not surface tarnish. The bead is oxidized on purpose so the recesses go black and the raised silver catches the light in relief — this is how the pattern is designed to read.

Each bead starts as a hollow silver base. The silversmith forms small silver balls and fine wire coils by hand, then solders them floret by floret onto the surface until it is covered. A light polish after oxidation brings the raised silver back to a bright finish while the recesses stay dark.
