The Story

Hill Tribe silver is the metalwork of the Karen people of Southeast Asia, worked at 94–98% pure silver — a higher fine-silver content than standard sterling. Pieces are typically finished with a darkened background so that stamped and raised detail reads with more contrast.

The repeating flower along this fringe is built bead by bead and stamp by stamp rather than cast from a single mold. A layered bead collar paired with a dangling fringe is a construction associated with festive and ceremonial silver in the region, where small moving elements were valued for their sound as much as their shape.

This piece was made in Laos, where the same hand-stamping and dangle-fringe techniques are practiced by silversmiths working in the Hill Tribe tradition. Each flower is formed separately, stamped, darkened in the recesses, and then hand-linked one at a time along the front.
