Because each bead is wrapped from a separate scrap of salvaged sari fabric, the pattern, color placement and exact tone of every bead vary piece to piece.

Kantha is a stitching tradition from Bengal — West Bengal and Bangladesh — that turned worn cotton saris into new cloth through dense running stitch. Here the same instinct, using fabric that already had a life, carries into beadwork. Sari scraps are wrapped and stitched around a bead core instead of layered flat into a quilt.

Because the cloth comes from used saris, every scrap carries the printed motif, woven border or dye pattern of the garment it came from. No two beads on this necklace repeat. Working in blues means the maker sorted for tonal harmony — indigo, denim, midnight — while letting each individual pattern still show through.

Each bead starts as a core wrapped tightly in a cut scrap of sari cloth, raw edges folded under and stitched down by hand so the textile lies smooth. The oversized front beads take the most handling. Once graduated by size, the beads are strung on four separate strands and finished with brass jump rings, clasp and extender.
