The Story

Wood beadwork runs through the Philippines' jewelry trade — local hardwoods cut, sanded, and either dyed or left in their natural tone before being strung. This piece keeps the material undyed and unlacquered, so the wood's own color variation carries the surface rather than a uniform finish covering it.

The multi-strand construction is a practical shape as much as a decorative one. Cords of different lengths are knotted together at the ends so the strands fall at different depths, giving a layered look from a single piece rather than a stack.

Beads are cut and drilled by hand, then sorted by size and worked onto the cords with a knot after each round to hold the spacing. Evening the tension across three or four cords of different lengths is the step that takes a practiced hand.
