The beads come from a natural nut, so slight differences in size, color and surface texture between pieces are normal and part of the material.

The Story

Tagua is the seed of a palm that grows in Ecuador's coastal and Amazonian forests. Once dried, the nut hardens into a dense, ivory-colored material that carves, sands and polishes much like animal ivory — the reason it came to be called vegetable ivory and was shipped by the ton for shirt and coat buttons until plastics took over that market.

Tagua work in Ecuador has since shifted from buttons to jewelry, which gives cooperatives a market for a renewable material grown in standing palm forest rather than one that is mined or animal-sourced.

The soft gray-green here comes from an organic vegetable dye bath rather than a synthetic pigment. That is why the color reads muted and slightly uneven from bead to bead — a natural material taking color the way natural materials do.
