Each disc is hammered and finished by hand, so the shape, texture and finish shift slightly from one piece to the next.

The Story

The open collar — sometimes called a torque — is one of the oldest necklace forms: a single rigid wire that flexes to slip over the head, then holds its shape at the collarbone. It is structural rather than decorative, letting the discs at the front do the visual work.

Here the discs are graduated in size and hand-hammered, so each one lifts and domes a little differently. Because they are stacked rather than fused flat, every edge catches light on its own — the front reads with dimension rather than as a single motif.

The piece is shaped and finished by hand in a Turkish metalworking workshop. Sheet pewter is cut into rounds, hammered one at a time, oxidized, and then fixed in clusters to a wire that has been bent to hold its own open, springy shape.
