A small oval pendant hangs from a fine cable chain, its face carved with hieroglyphic-style script and a sun-disc arc at the crown. The darkened recesses throw the raised lines into sharp relief.

  • Material: Pewter with gold plating
  • Color: Antiqued gold
  • Drop: 0.5 in
  • Chain: 18 in cable
  • Finish: Gold-plated, antiqued
  • Origin: USA

At roughly a half inch tall, it reads as an intentional detail — the kind of piece that sits quietly at the collarbone and rewards a closer look. The chain is fine enough to layer with longer pendants at varying drops, or to wear on its own.

Details
  • Antique-finish hieroglyphic-style etching
  • Dainty scale
  • Lightweight pewter casting
  • Gold-plated chain

Each pendant is antiqued and plated individually, so tone and finish vary slightly from one piece to the next.

The Story

The scarab was one of the most widely used motifs in Egyptian personal ornament, carved into seals and set into rings for roughly three thousand years. Amulets from the period were often inscribed with the name of a deity; the sun-disc arc at the top of this pendant nods to the association with Ra, the sun god.

A design like this starts as an engraving cut into a mold, which is then used to cast the pewter — a soft metal that holds fine detail cleanly. Once cast, the piece is plated in a thin layer of gold and antiqued: the recesses of the etching are darkened so the raised lines and sun-disc motif read sharply against the surface.

Craft & Care
  • Technique: Cast pewter with gold plating

Keep away from water, lotion and perfume. Wipe gently with a soft cloth after wear, and store it flat in a dry place to protect the gold plating.

Questions

How long is the chain?

The chain is 18 in. The pendant is about 0.5 in tall.

Is this necklace solid gold?

No. The pendant is cast pewter finished with gold plating and an antiqued detail, which gives it its warm, aged gold tone.

How do I keep the gold plating from wearing off?

Keep it away from water, lotion and perfume, and take it off before showering or swimming. Wipe it with a soft cloth after wear and store it flat in a dry place.

Where is this necklace made?

Made in the USA, with a design drawn from Egyptian scarab amulets and hieroglyphic script.
