Each disc is a concentric weave of black palm fiber, crossed by a hammered gold wire that curves down the face and closes in a tight coiled spiral near the base.

  • Material: Iraca palm fiber, gold-plated brass
  • Color: Black and gold
  • Size: 2.5 x 2 in
  • Closure: Post
  • Origin: Colombia

At two and a half inches across, the scale reads big but the weight does not — plant fiber sits light on the ear. Against a plain neckline the black weave catches light in fine radial lines while the gold traces one unbroken gesture across it.

Details
  • Hand-woven palm fiber disc
  • Hammered gold-plated wire spiral overlay
  • Lightweight drop

Each disc is hand-woven from a natural palm fiber, so small differences in texture and shading between pairs are normal.

The Story

Iraca palm splits into fine strips that dry pliable enough to curve tightly but need a radiating structure to lie flat. That constraint is what gives each disc its shape — concentric rounds spiraling out from a center point, the same logic Colombian weavers use to build the region's tightly coiled palm hats, scaled here to earring size.

The gold-plated wire runs a spiral of its own, hammered to a faceted surface and curled loose across the woven face. Two Colombian material traditions — plant-fiber weaving and worked metal — set against each other on a single small object, rather than one used as trim on the other.

Each disc starts as raw palm split, dried and dyed black before it is coiled and stitched by hand into a flat spiral. The brass wire is hammered, bent, coiled and gold-plated separately, then set onto the finished weave.

Craft & Care
  • Technique: Iraca palm weaving

Keep away from water, perfume and lotion. Store flat or in a soft pouch so the woven disc holds its shape.

Questions

What is iraca palm?

A palm plant grown in Colombia. Its leaves are split into fine strips and hand-woven, traditionally into hats, and here into the woven disc of the earring.

Are these earrings heavy?

No. Woven palm fiber is naturally light, so the scale reads much bigger than the weight and they stay comfortable through the day.

Will the black color fade?

The fiber is dyed before it is woven. Keep the earrings dry and away from lotion and perfume to help the color and weave hold up over time.

Is the gold spiral solid gold?

No. The spiral is brass with a gold plating, not solid gold.

How should I store them?

Flat or in a soft pouch, away from moisture, so the woven disc keeps its shape between wears.
