Each ring is hand-formed and hand-finished, so slight variations in texture, oxidation and the exact curve of the fish are normal.

The Story

The piece belongs to a wide vein of Southeast Asian metalwork where an animal's shape is bent to fit the geometry of a band. The fish here isn't rendered literally so much as folded and stretched around the finger, its body doing double duty as image and structure.

The blackened recesses set against brighter raised silver are a technique choice as much as an aesthetic one. Darkening the low points of a design makes hand-worked detail read clearly at a glance, which is why it appears so often in hill tribe silver from northern Thailand.

A silversmith begins with a flat strip of silver, annealing it with a torch so it can be worked without cracking, then hammers and stretches it to form the tapering wrap. Scales, fins and eye are chased and stamped in with small hand tools, one strike at a time, before the band is curved to shape and the seam soldered closed. A liver-of-sulfur solution darkens the recessed lines; the raised surfaces are then polished back by hand so the pattern stands out in contrast.

How does the adjustable sizing work?

The band has an open back, so it can be gently squeezed narrower or eased wider by hand to fine-tune the fit within its size range. S fits US 6-8, L fits US 8-10.

Will the oxidized black detailing wear off?

The darkened recesses are stable under normal wear, but like any oxidized silver finish they can lighten gradually with handling. A jeweler can re-darken them if you want the contrast refreshed.

Is this solid sterling silver?
