The Story

Coconut shell is one of the most abundant materials in the Philippines, and turning the hard, discarded shell into jewelry-grade beads is a long-standing response to that abundance. A material once treated as scrap becomes wearable.

The multi-strand, graduated silhouette is a signature of Philippine coconut bead work — the piece is built up from many separately strung rows rather than a single strand, which is what gives the finished necklace its drape and volume around the collarbone.

Shells are cleaned, cut into small discs and sanded smooth, then dyed and polished. Each disc is hand-strung, one by one, onto individual cords graduated in length and gathered at a single clasp so the strands fall in layers rather than a single loop.
