Horn and coconut shell are natural materials, so grain, tone and bead size vary slightly from one necklace to the next.

The Story

The horn is carabao — water buffalo — a byproduct of the local hide trade that Philippine makers reclaim, soften by boiling, and shape. The amber-to-brown striation running through the end cap is the material's own coloring, not dye.

The coconut shell beads are cut from the hard outer husk, dried, sanded into small discs and finished to a uniform matte black. Many parallel strands do the work of building volume that metal or stone would otherwise supply.

Each strand is cut, beaded and knotted individually onto waxed cord, then gathered into the horn end caps and closure. Keeping the cascade even across that many strands is the slow part of the build.
