The Story

The pattern reads left to right: a sequence of colored and clear glass beads arranged in Morse code, spelling out "empower." It is a piece of coded text laid across the front of the cuff, quiet unless you know what you are looking at.

Each band starts as a flat strip of brass, cut and shaped into an open cuff. A maker then marks out the coded letters and hand-stitches the glass beads across the front with needle and thread, working one bead at a time to keep the dot-and-dash pattern accurate.

It is made by a women's artisan collective in Kenya. Earnings from pieces like this go toward entrepreneurship training for the makers.
