The Story

Tagua is the seed of a palm native to Ecuador's coastal and rainforest regions. Its dense, ivory-white interior polishes much like animal ivory, and in the early twentieth century it was shipped abroad by the ton to be carved into buttons — enough that it briefly ranked as one of Ecuador's leading exports.

That same carving skill now goes into beads. This necklace takes a form-first approach: tube shapes, multi-strand overlay, and the material left to show its own warm, mottled color, dyed lightly and knotted by hand rather than dressed up with imagery.

Nuts are gathered after they fall from the palm, then dried, sliced and shaped into tubes before sanding and coloring with organic vegetable dyes. Each bead is strung and knotted individually along the cord — a slow step that keeps the six strands from tangling and lets them drape with visible structure.
