A pictorial panel of Frida Kahlo's profile, loom-woven bead by bead in blush, rose and warm brown, sits at the center of sixteen graduated strands that fall into a soft fringe across the collarbone.

  • Material: Czech glass seed beads, gemstone beads
  • Color: Blush, rose, warm brown
  • Length: 33 in
  • Width: 2 in
  • Closure: Loop
  • Origin: Guatemala
  • Metal: Alloy hardware

The palette is quieter than Kahlo's own, which lets the portrait read as drawing more than icon. Worn against a solid neckline the piece holds its own composition, with the fringe strands catching light and shifting as you move.

Each necklace is hand-beaded, so slight variations in color and bead placement are expected from piece to piece.

The Story

The portrait is built on a bead loom, where fine Czech glass seed beads are strung and woven row by row across parallel threads to form a flat, pictorial band — the same row-by-row logic as backstrap weaving, scaled down to seed-bead width to render color gradients and features.

Each of the sixteen bands is woven separately, then joined; the fringe strands are hand-strung and knotted off individually before the loop closure is attached. The technique is a hallmark of small beadwork ateliers in Guatemala, where a single piece can carry the drape and presence of a woven collar.

Kahlo's flower-crowned image has become a recurring subject for beadwork makers across Mexico and Central America — both as tribute and as a showcase of how convincingly a recognizable face can be translated into a grid of beads.

Craft & Care
  • Technique: Loom-woven beadwork
