A row of rounded gold beads swells from small at the shoulders to a broad, flattened oval at the throat, each one seated between tight knots of black cotton cord. The warm metal reads clean against the matte black.

The scale reads as one clear shape from across a room, but up close the beads register individually — no two curves quite identical, no two highlights sitting the same way. Worn against a plain neckline, it becomes the one piece the eye settles on.

Each bead is shaped and finished by hand, so slight differences in color, texture and shape from one bead to the next are normal.

The Story

Graduated metal-bead necklaces — small at the nape, building to a wide bead at the throat — are a long-standing form in Indian metal jewelry. Beads are cast or shaped one at a time and strung by hand, so the rhythm of the piece is set by the maker rather than a machine.

The cord is not decorative filler. A knot sits between every bead, holding its position and controlling the spacing that builds the graduated curve. The black cotton reads as a design element in its own right against the warm metal.

The antique gold surface is a deliberate oxidized treatment rather than a bright polish, giving the metal a warm, slightly weathered tone. Each bead is finished by hand, which is why color and texture shift subtly from one bead to the next.
