The Story

The elephant is a common motif in Indian decorative carving, worked into bone, wood and metal — and often placed at the visual center of a piece where the maker has room to show technique.

Here, two carved bone cylinders act as the structural gathering points, holding many parallel strands of fine seed beads on either shoulder. The strands are massed for volume; the cylinders anchor them and give the composition its focal point.

Each bone element is cut and worked in relief with a fine blade or rotary tool, then stained and polished so the elephant figures read against the raw surface.
