A tall open rectangle in warm gold, its long edges laced with fiery orange thread in a running zigzag. One small carnelian bead hangs at the center, three more drop in a row along the bottom.

  • Material: Brass, cotton thread, carnelian
  • Color: Gold, orange
  • Length: 2.5 in plus hook
  • Width: 1.0625 in
  • Closure: Fish hook
  • Sold as: Pair
  • Origin: India

The open frame keeps the scale bold but the weight light, so the earrings swing freely from the ear. The thread reads first, the beads catch second, and the negative space inside the rectangle keeps the whole composition graphic rather than heavy.

Details
  • Open-cut rectangular brass frame
  • Hand-laced orange cotton thread along both long edges
  • Three carnelian bead drops at the base
  • Single carnelian bead suspended in the center
  • Gold-tone ear wires

The pieces are hand-laced and set with natural carnelian, so thread tension, spacing and bead color shift slightly from pair to pair.

The Story

The frame starts as a flat sheet of brass, cut into an open rectangle and pierced with small holes down both long edges. An artisan then laces cotton thread through the holes in a crisscross pattern, pulling each pass taut so the thread sits flat and even along the metal.

Carnelian is a warm orange-to-red chalcedony that has been cut and beaded across South Asia for a very long time, valued for its saturated color and the way it catches light. Here three small drops hang from the base and one from the center, picking up the orange of the lacing and tying the palette together.

Because the lacing and beading are done by hand, thread tension, spacing and bead color shift slightly from pair to pair.

Craft & Care
  • Technique: Hand-laced thread and cut-brass metalwork

Wipe with a soft dry cloth after wear and store away from moisture to protect the brass and the thread lacing.

Questions

What are these earrings made of?

A brass frame hand-laced with dark orange cotton thread, set with three carnelian beads at the base and one at the center.

Each earring measures 2.5 in by 1.0625 in, not including the ear hook.

Are they heavy to wear?

The open-cut brass frame keeps them light despite the bold, elongated silhouette.

Will the thread lacing and bead placement look exactly like the photo?

Each pair is laced and beaded by hand, so slight variation in thread tension and bead color is normal.
