The cotton band is woven and the leather cuff is cut and finished by hand, so small variations in pattern placement, color and leather grain are normal from piece to piece.

The Story

The chevron on this band is warp-faced weaving — colored threads alternated at set intervals, row by row, so the geometric pattern is built directly into the cloth rather than printed or embroidered on. The same technique runs through Guatemalan textiles, from huipiles to belts and sashes.

Here it is scaled down to a narrow strip and set into a pre-cut leather cuff, folded, stitched and fitted with snap hardware. The handwork of the textile stays visible; the leather backing gives it enough structure for daily wear.

Each step, from the weaving to the leatherwork, is done by hand by fair trade artisans in rural Guatemala.
