ILA-N01

Roughly a hundred fine twisted cords fan across the collarbone in a warm rust terracotta, anchored at each shoulder by a solid band that gathers the whole into one ridged, sculptural collar.

  • Material: Leather
  • Color: Rust terracotta
  • Length: 21 in
  • Width: 3 in
  • Closure: Leather loop and button
  • Origin: Ghana

The scale sits high and full at the base of the neck, reading as one deliberate object rather than a stack of layered chains. Worn over a solid crewneck or an open blazer, it holds the whole outfit on its own — nothing else needed at the neckline.

Details
  • Roughly 100 hand-twisted leather cords
  • Layered bib silhouette with ridged, corded texture
  • Solid leather end bands at each shoulder
  • Hand-stitched leather loop-and-button closure
  • Fairtrade sourced

Each cord is twisted by hand, so slight variation in cord thickness, tone and strand count is normal from piece to piece.

The Story

Leatherworking is a working trade in Ghana — hide turned into sandals, belts and bags, and, when the same skill is pointed at adornment, jewelry. The cord itself is the technique: narrow strips of leather twisted by hand into slim, even lengths.

Here that cord is built up strand by strand into a dense, layered collar. The ridged texture and the graduated width across the curve are a direct result of the hand process, not something a mold or a machine would produce.

Roughly a hundred cords are gathered and bound in stages, then anchored into the two solid leather end bands. The closure at the back is a hand-stitched leather loop and button, so nothing metal interrupts the line.

Craft & Care
  • Technique: Hand-twisted leather cordwork

Wipe with a soft, dry cloth and keep away from water, perfume and direct sun. Store flat or hanging so the cords keep their shape.

Questions

Is it heavy to wear?

It has a full, substantial presence, but because the body is slim leather cord rather than metal or stone, it wears lighter than the layered shape suggests.

How does it fasten?

A hand-stitched leather loop-and-button closure at the back — no metal clasp.

Will the color and texture match the photo exactly?

Closely, but not identically. Each cord is twisted by hand, so small differences in strand thickness and tone are normal.

How should I store and care for it?

Wipe with a soft dry cloth after wear, keep it away from water and perfume, and store flat or hanging so the strands hold their shape.

Where is it made?

Handcrafted in Ghana and sourced through Fairtrade practices.
