Roughly a hundred fine twisted cords fan across the collarbone in a warm rust terracotta, anchored at each shoulder by a solid band that gathers the whole into one ridged, sculptural collar.

Each cord is twisted by hand, so slight variation in cord thickness, tone and strand count is normal from piece to piece.

The Story

Leatherworking is a working trade in Ghana — hide turned into sandals, belts and bags, and, when the same skill is pointed at adornment, jewelry. The cord itself is the technique: narrow strips of leather twisted by hand into slim, even lengths.

Here that cord is built up strand by strand into a dense, layered collar. The ridged texture and the graduated width across the curve are a direct result of the hand process, not something a mold or a machine would produce.

Roughly a hundred cords are gathered and bound in stages, then anchored into the two solid leather end bands. The closure at the back is a hand-stitched leather loop and button, so nothing metal interrupts the line.

Is it heavy to wear?

It has a full, substantial presence, but because the body is slim leather cord rather than metal or stone, it wears lighter than the layered shape suggests.

How does it fasten?

Closely, but not identically. Each cord is twisted by hand, so small differences in strand thickness and tone are normal.
