The Story

The spiral is the signature unit of Karen Hill Tribe metalwork. A silversmith draws silver into fine wire, coils each length by hand into a tight round, then solders dozens of these coils together into a larger shape — here, a diamond lattice.

Hill Tribe silver itself runs 94 to 98 percent pure, notably higher than sterling's 92.5. The result is a slightly softer luster and a heavier hand, and the higher purity is something Karen silversmiths point to with some pride.

Finishing is precise repetitive work. Once the lattice is soldered together, the piece is cleaned, oxidized to darken the recesses so the coil detail reads, then polished across the raised surfaces before the ear wires are attached.
