The Story

The small round beads are wound from Kantha cloth — layers of recycled cotton sari fabric bound tightly around a wood core until the surface is fully covered and firm to the touch. The wrapping is hand-fed, so no two beads land exactly alike.

Kantha itself began in Bengal, in eastern India, as a running-stitch technique for layering worn saris and dhotis into quilts and wraps. Making beads from the same fabric keeps that habit in play: the dye, the weave and the wear of the original cloth all stay visible in the finished piece.

The heart-shaped brass links are an unadorned repeating form, chosen to let the fabric and stone stay the visual focus. Sodalite — a deep-blue mineral often flecked with white or gray — sits alongside the textile beads and pushes the whole palette into a study in indigo.
