The Story

Kantha is a running-stitch textile tradition from West Bengal and neighboring Bangladesh, where worn cotton saris and dhotis are layered and hand-stitched into quilts rather than discarded. These beads carry the same instinct — old cloth given new form — but wound and shaped by hand into rounds instead of stitched flat.

Each bead starts as a strip of cut cotton fabric, often remnants from larger textile work. An artisan winds the strip tightly around a lightweight core until it holds its shape as a firm, rounded bead. Because the tension of the wrap and the placement of pattern shift piece to piece, no two beads take the color the same way.

Once a batch is finished, the beads are sorted by size and strung by hand into graduated strands, spaced with brass and finished with a clasp and extender chain.
