Four strands of round fabric-wrapped beads tier across the collarbone, graduating from a fine top row of small beads to a bottom strand of the largest. Every bead carries a different print — florals, stripes, solids in red, green, orange, teal and lilac.

  • Material: Recycled kantha textile beads, alloy findings
  • Color: Multicolor
  • Length: 18.5 in, adjustable
  • Closure: Gold-tone hook
  • Origin: India

The composition shifts bead by bead, so the eye never settles in one place. Light textile keeps the volume from feeling heavy on the neck. Gold-tone links between beads catch a little light between the color.

The Story

Kantha is a running-stitch textile from West Bengal and Bangladesh, where old cotton saris and dhotis are layered and hand-stitched into thick quilted cloth. It began as a household practice of reusing worn fabric rather than throwing it out.

For this necklace, scraps of that reclaimed cloth are cut and wrapped tightly around bead cores, one at a time. Each bead ends up carrying a fragment of a different sari — a stripe, a floral border, a solid dyed panel — so no two read the same.

The wrapped beads are strung and linked by hand across four separate strands, with the lengths graduated so they stack evenly when worn. Cutting, wrapping and stringing is done bead by bead, which is why the finished piece shows the small irregularities of handwork.

Craft & Care
  • Technique: Kantha textile, upcycled sari fabric

Store flat or hanging, away from moisture, perfume and harsh chemicals. Wipe the fabric and hardware gently with a soft dry cloth.

Questions

How long is the necklace and is it adjustable?

It measures 18.5 in and adjusts, so it can sit higher or lower depending on how you fasten it.

What are the beads made of?

Each bead is a core hand-wrapped in reclaimed kantha textile — layered, upcycled sari cotton rather than new material.

Will mine look exactly like the photo?

Not exactly. The beads are wrapped in reused fabric scraps, so colors, prints and bead placement vary slightly from piece to piece.

How should I store and care for it?

Keep it away from moisture, perfume and harsh chemicals. Store it flat or hanging so the fabric-wrapped beads keep their shape.
