Each bead is wrapped from a different scrap of recycled sari fabric, so color, print placement and bead tone vary from piece to piece.

The Story

Each bead here is wrapped from a strip of recycled sari fabric, wound tight around a core so it holds a rounded shape and a matte, cloth-like surface. Because the strips come from different saris, no two beads carry the same color or the same fragment of print.

The beads are strung and knotted into a two-row bib, then finished with a brass clasp and extender. Everything is assembled by hand — sorting fabric by color, cutting, wrapping, stringing — which is why the palette shifts across the piece rather than repeating.

This is the Kantha tradition from Bengal: worn saris and cotton cloth turned into new objects rather than discarded. The record of that prior life shows in the beads themselves.
