The Story

Wire-wrapping brass around a shaped base is a working technique among Kenyan metalworkers: straight-gauge wire coiled by hand into tight, even arcs rather than cast or stamped. Here the coils fan out across the top of the wood half-moon and gather at a single wound spiral in the center.

The spiral is one of the most direct forms in hand-coiled brass — a single length of wire wound continuously inward until it closes on itself. Paired with locally worked wood, it reflects a common East African combination: brass for its warm color and workability, wood for a light, durable base at this scale.

Every coil, spiral and drop bar is shaped with hand tools rather than machine stamping, and the wood and metal are fitted together before pairs are matched at the end.
