The Story

Horn is a low-waste material in Indian jewelry-making, cut from the buffalo and cattle horn left over from the meat and leather trades. Artisans clean, boil and flatten it, then cut, dye and polish it into beads.

Cutting horn into flat, square blocks rather than the traditional rounded bead is what gives this necklace its graphic, architectural line. The alternating red-and-gray sequence and the brass cluster at the bottom are hand-strung — a single artisan working the full 35-inch length in one sitting.
