The Story

The golden strands at the center are capim dourado — a wetland sedge that grows in the Jalapão region of Tocantins state, in Brazil's Cerrado. It is cut once a year, in a narrow window after flowering and before the seed heads drop. The color is the harvest itself: shade-drying the stalks preserves the metallic sheen, and direct sun dulls it.

Weaving capim dourado into cord, coils and small woven segments is a craft carried on by Kalunga communities — descendants of formerly enslaved Afro-Brazilians who settled in Tocantins — alongside other artisan families of the Jalapão region. What began as baskets and utilitarian objects has grown into a wider jewelry and accessories trade.

Here, the woven segments sit between faceted brass rings and layered cord strands, translating a regional fiber technique into a modular contemporary necklace — architectural fully assembled, quiet with the rings removed.
