Tagua, bombona and acai are natural seeds and dyed by hand, so bead color, grain and marbling vary from piece to piece.

The Story

Tagua is the seed of a palm that grows along Ecuador's coast and the edge of the Amazon. Once dried, it hardens into a dense, ivory-colored material that carves and polishes much like animal ivory — the reason it is often called vegetable ivory. Ecuadorian workshops have worked with it since the button trade of the late 1800s.

Bombona and acai are seeds from other regional palms, gathered as a byproduct of harvesting the fruit for food and oil. The mottled surface and grain visible on each bead come from the seed itself, not from any applied pattern.

Each tagua seed is dried, cut and sanded into flat discs, then colored with vegetable dye to reach these terracotta and rust tones. Bombona and acai seeds are cleaned, sorted by size and often left in their natural marbling. A stringer then sequences the beads across four strands and finishes each with brass-tone spacers and a clasp.

Wipe clean with a soft, dry cloth and store flat, away from water, perfume and direct sun, which can dull the vegetable dye over time.
