Red Seed-Bead Rope Necklace with Painted Ceramic Trio

Each ceramic bead is painted by hand, so the placement, color balance and pattern shift slightly from one piece to the next.

The piece pairs two everyday materials of Indian beadwork: fine glass seed beads, strung in multiples to build volume and drape, and ceramic beads shaped and fired from local pottery clay. Multi-strand necklaces like this are built up strand by strand, which is how the beader controls fullness, color depth and how the piece sits against the body.

The three focal beads are painted freehand after firing — floral and abstract marks in green, yellow and red, laid down in layers of color rather than traced from a template. It is the same loose, bold approach found in Indian painted pottery and folk decoration: color blocks, botanical forms, brushwork left visible.

Once the paint is set, a stringer works dozens of tiny beads onto multiple lengths of cord, strand by strand, before gathering all of them through the three ceramic beads and finishing the ends with a clasp. Slow, repetitive handwork long before the necklace reaches its finished shape.

Wipe with a soft, dry cloth and store flat or hanging so the strands do not tangle. Keep it away from water, perfume and harsh chemicals, which can dull the glass and painted finish.
