Three strands drape at graduated lengths, the largest fabric-wrapped beads gathering at center in turquoise, magenta, orange and yellow prints. Small polished gemstones sit between them, catching light against the matte cloth.

  • Material: Recycled Kantha cotton over wood, lead- and nickel-free alloy
  • Stones: Tiger's eye, carnelian, aventurine
  • Color: Multicolor
  • Length: 20 in with 3 in extender
  • Origin: India

The volume reads large but weighs almost nothing — cotton over wood cores rather than solid stone. Look longer and the color mix keeps shifting: no two beads carry the same scrap of print, and every gemstone finds a slightly different shade to sit against.

Details
  • Triple-strand design
  • Hand-wrapped fabric beads in mixed prints
  • Tiger's eye, carnelian and aventurine gemstone accents
  • 3 in extender for adjustable fit
  • Lead- and nickel-free alloy hardware

Each bead is wrapped from a different scrap of kantha cloth, and the gemstone beads are natural — so color, print and stone placement shift from one necklace to the next.

The Story

Kantha is a running-stitch textile from West Bengal and neighboring Bangladesh, originally a way of layering worn cotton — saris, dhotis — and binding it row by row into quilts and wraps. Old cloth was mended into something new; nothing was thrown out.

Here, strips of that stitched cloth are wound tight around wooden bead cores, layer over layer, so the prints and stitch lines of the original scraps show up in miniature on every bead. Because each bead is wrapped from a different piece of fabric, no two necklaces read the same.

Tiger's eye, carnelian and aventurine are strung between the fabric beads — warm golden-brown, deep orange-red, and cool flecked green. Their polish sits against the matte weave of the cotton and gives the color mix its punctuation.

Craft & Care
  • Technique: Kantha fabric-wrapped beadwork

Wipe the fabric-wrapped beads with a soft, dry cloth. Store flat, away from moisture and direct sun, so the colors don't fade.

Questions

How long is the necklace?

It measures 20 inches with a 3-inch extender, so you can adjust it to sit at the length you prefer.

What is the fabric on the beads made from?

Kantha cotton, often reclaimed from saris, hand-wrapped around wooden bead cores.

Will my necklace look exactly like the one in the photo?

Not exactly. Each bead is wrapped from a different scrap of recycled fabric, so the color placement and print mix will vary slightly from piece to piece.

Is this necklace hypoallergenic?

The metal findings are a lead- and nickel-free alloy, which is a safer choice for sensitive skin.

How should I store this necklace?

Lay it flat in a dry spot away from direct sunlight and moisture to help the fabric-wrapped beads keep their color and shape.
