The Story

Tagua is the seed of a palm native to Ecuador's coastal and Amazonian regions. Its dense, fine-grained interior takes a high polish and holds dye evenly, which is what gives these beads their smooth, saturated color and ivory-like sheen — the nickname "vegetable ivory" comes from that quality.

The nuts are gathered after they fall from the palm, sun-dried until they harden, then cut, shaped and sanded into uniform round beads. Hand-dyeing happens in small batches; the grain absorbs color unevenly, so saturation has to be controlled bead by bead.

The finished beads are polished by hand and strung into a continuous, clasp-free strand. It is a modern, unornamented form — the design lets the color and the scale of the bead carry the piece.
