The Story

Job's Tears (Coix lacryma-jobi) is a hardy grass grown across East Africa. Its seed pods dry into small beads with a naturally hollow center, one of the few beads in nature that can be strung without drilling. In Uganda, artisans use them as a plant-based alternative to glass or plastic, letting the seed's own gray-and-cream mottling stand as the only pattern on the piece.

Because the beads come straight from the plant, no two are alike. Shading ranges from pale ivory to deep charcoal, with faint ridges left by the husk. Rather than dyeing or sorting into uniform lots, artisans keep the natural range intact — the finished cuff reads as a gathering of individual beads, not a repeated print.

The dried seeds are sorted by hand for size and color, then threaded one at a time onto a length of memory wire until six coils are complete. The wire's built-in spring holds the wrapped shape while keeping the cuff flexible enough to slip on and off the wrist.
