The necklace is made by women artisans in India, where hand-beading and textile handwork are organized through workshops and cooperatives that offer flexible, paid, skilled work close to home. Clustering many small fabric beads together — rather than stringing one uniform strand — is what gives the front its density and lets the maker set a range of blue fabrics side by side.

Each finished bead is capped with a small metal fitting and hung by jump ring from the linked gold-plated brass chain, built up bead by bead until the cluster reaches its full drape.
