The Story

Tagua is the seed of a palm native to Ecuador and neighboring parts of South America — dense and ivory-white on the inside, carvable like a soft stone. Ecuadorian workshops have used it for generations to make buttons, figurines and jewelry.

Each slice here is cut and shaped by hand into a wavy, organic form, sanded and polished smooth, then submerged in vegetable dye to reach this saturated red. Because no two carved pieces come out the same, the cascade is balanced by eye as the necklace is strung — assembled rather than templated.

The palms bear seed without being felled, so working with tagua keeps the craft tied to the forest it comes from.
