The Story

In Kenya, brass and bone are a familiar pairing in personal adornment. The two materials handle light in opposite ways and hold a hand-worked edge differently: brass takes a hammer mark and a warm patina, bone finishes smooth, cool and pale.

The cone shape is simple, but it rewards hand-shaping over casting. Each cone is worked individually, so the taper and the line where it meets the bone shift slightly from pair to pair — evidence that a person, not a mold, made the decision on the metal in front of them.

A metalworker cuts and rolls a flat sheet of brass into a tapering cone, solders the seam, then files and buffs it to bring up the patina. A separate piece of bone is shaped and polished to a rounded tip. The two are threaded together and fitted to a hand-bent ear wire.
