The Story

Wood turning and bead stringing are widely practiced small-scale crafts in the Philippines, sitting alongside shell, horn and seed jewelry. Local hardwoods are shaped into rounds on small lathes, sanded and finished by hand, then sorted by size and shade before they reach a stringer.

The three-strand, graduated format is a hallmark of Philippine wood-bead work: strands are cut to slightly different lengths and beads are stepped up toward the center front, so the layers fall with visible depth rather than sitting flat.

Some beads are left in the natural taupe of the raw wood; others are stained to the tan and cherry tones used here. The color blend is set bead by bead before stringing, then finished with a sliding knot so the length can be adjusted after the piece leaves the stringer's hands.
