The pair drops about an inch and a half from the ear wire, light enough on the lobe to swing with the smallest turn of the head. The darkened grooves inside each coil catch the light differently than the polished wire around them, so the design reads clearly even at a distance.

The Story

The spiral repeats at four scales — a small coin-sized coil at the center of the hoop, three graduated coils fanning out below, one more trailing at the tip. The same gesture, built up loop by loop rather than stamped or cast.

Hill Tribe silver is the alloy associated with Karen silversmithing in the hill regions of mainland Southeast Asia. It carries 94 to 98 percent pure silver — higher than the 92.5 percent of sterling — which gives it a slightly softer shine and holds fine wirework crisply. Coiled and filigree designs sit particularly well in it.

Each spiral starts as a single length of wire, drawn down and coiled by hand around a small mandrel until it tightens into shape. The coils are soldered together to build the open frame and graduated drops, then oxidized so the recesses darken against the polished wire. Because every loop is turned by eye, no two close identically.
