Tagua is a natural seed, so the grain and exact shade of each slice vary slightly. No two necklaces are precisely alike.

The Story

Tagua is the seed of the tagua palm, native to the coastal and Amazonian rainforest of Ecuador. Once dried, the interior hardens to a dense, ivory-like grain that can be sliced, sanded and dyed — historically used as a substitute for animal ivory in buttons and small carved goods.

For this necklace the seed is cut into long tapered slices, hand-dyed in small batches, then drilled and knotted onto the cord one piece at a time. The staggered lengths are a design convention in Ecuadorian tagua work, letting each slice show its own grain and shading rather than reading as a uniform surface.

The technique sits inside a broader Ecuadorian craft economy built around plant materials — straw for Panama hats, tagua for buttons and jewelry — where the value comes from patient hand-finishing of a renewable material rather than mass production.
