Small wooden discs, dyed deep red across the shoulders and inked black through the front, cluster along multiple twisted strands. The color shift is deliberate — graphic, blocked rather than gradual.

  • Material: Dyed wood discs, carved horn closure
  • Color: Red, black
  • Length: 21 in
  • Closure: Carved horn hook-and-eye
  • Origin: Philippines

The strands twist against each other so the discs move like a woven textile rather than sitting as a rigid collar. Volume across the neckline without the weight of stone or metal, and a carved horn hook that reads as ornament rather than hardware at the back of the neck.

Details
  • Multi-strand twisted construction
  • Color-graduated red-to-black discs
  • Carved horn hook-and-eye closure
  • Lightweight wood beads

The discs are cut and dyed from natural wood, and the closure is carved from natural horn. Small variations in grain, tone and shape are inherent to both.

The Story

Wood and horn are a Philippine specialty — coconut shell, buffalo horn and native hardwoods turned into jewelry components by small workshops that grew out of a mid-20th-century export craft. The discs here are cut from wood dowels, sanded round, and dyed in small batches.

The twisted multi-strand form takes that base skill in a graphic direction. Stringing dozens of small, uniform discs across several cords lets the piece move and catch light like woven fabric, while the shift from red to black gives it color-blocked weight without any metal or stone doing the work.

The horn hook is worth its own look. Carved and polished to a glassy finish, it does double duty as clasp and ornament rather than hiding at the back of the neck.

Craft & Care
  • Technique: Philippine wood and horn jewelry making

Wipe with a soft, dry cloth. Store flat, away from direct sunlight and moisture, to keep the dyed color true.

Questions

What is the necklace made from?

Smooth discs of natural wood, dyed red and black, strung across multiple strands with a hook-and-eye closure carved from natural horn.

Is it heavy to wear?

Wood is naturally lightweight compared to metal or stone, so despite its full, layered look, it sits comfortably across the shoulders and chest.

How does the closure work?

A carved horn hook slips through a horn eye at the back of the neck — a simple, secure clasp that doubles as a design detail.

Will the color fade or transfer?

As with any dyed natural material, avoid contact with water, perfume and light-colored fabrics to keep the color true.

How long is it?

Approximately 21 in.
