The Story

Tagua is the seed of a palm that grows in the rainforests of Ecuador, Colombia and Panama. Dried, it hardens to something close to ivory in density — dense enough to cut, sand and polish like a hardwood, which is how it earned the name vegetable ivory.

Here the nut is cut into crescents one at a time, sanded to a rounded edge, saturated with dye, buffed to a glossy finish, then drilled and joined at the edges with small jump rings. The color sits inside the piece rather than on top of it, so grain shows through where the dye is thinnest.

Because tagua only exists where the palm is left standing, working with it gives the tree more value alive than felled — a large part of why tagua craft is tied to keeping rainforest intact.
