The Story

Horn is worked into beads, buttons and combs across India as a byproduct of the region's cattle and buffalo trade rather than a material grown or mined for the purpose. The faceted, geometric cut is a hallmark of horn work: the material's density lets it hold clean angles and a high polish once shaped and buffed. The alternating yellow and red comes from dye baths applied after cutting, a common way to introduce color into a material that starts out in muted natural browns and grays.

Raw curved sections are flattened, cut into blocks and shaped by hand or on a small lathe, then sanded through progressively finer grits. Each bead is dyed, cured, buffed to its final sheen, hand-drilled and strung bead by bead with brass spacers.
