The Story

The construction is Guatemalan loom-beading — fine threads warped on a small loom, seed beads worked across them row by row. A recognizable image only surfaces once dozens of rows are placed; the portrait panel takes hundreds of individual beads to render the red lips, the dark hair, the pink flowers at the crown.

Frida isn't a traditional Guatemalan motif. She's a contemporary image loom-beaders have adapted to their craft — the technique is heritage, the subject is now.

The multi-band silhouette is regional too. Central American beadwork tends to build necklaces as cascades of narrow strands rather than a single strung line, which is where the fringe-like movement and volume come from.
