Nine strands of small flat wood discs stack into a rounded bib, sage-gray and cream shifting row by row, gathered at the nape by two curved horn tips that meet in a hook-and-eye.

The discs are matte and small in the hand; the horn is polished, translucent and unexpectedly warm against the cooler tones below. From a distance the piece reads as one sculpted mass, up close as nine distinct lines. Worn over a plain neckline, it does the work of a collar.

The discs are cut from natural wood and the closure from natural horn, so grain, tone and shape vary slightly from piece to piece.

The Story

Filipino wood bead layering builds volume through many strands rather than a single line. The bib-shaped silhouette is a hallmark of the region's beadwork — nine rows of small flat discs stacked into a graphic collar.

The gray-and-cream pairing works through color blocking strand by strand, not through carved or painted motifs. Some rows run all gray, some all cream, some alternate, so the composition changes as you scan it.

The horn tips are shaped and polished separately, then fitted to the strands as the final step. Horn is worked across Philippine jewelry-making into buttons, clasps and findings; here it becomes the structural anchor at the nape.

Beautiful necklace

Beautiful necklace. It’s just a tad tight on me. I really wish the clasp was adjustable. I’m trying to think of a way I can extender of some sort. If you’re plus size, you may want to think twice.
