Each bead is hand-strung and the iraca fiber is hand-woven, so slight variations in color, weave and bead placement are normal from piece to piece.

The Story

The woven beads are made from iraca, a palm fiber worked by hand in Colombia — most known for the wide-brimmed hats plaited around Sandoná in the Nariño region. Here the same technique is scaled down and wound around bead cores, turning a hat-making craft into jewelry.

The smooth dark beads are acai seeds, cleaned and dried after the fruit is harvested from palms across the Colombian Amazon. What would otherwise be discarded is strung alongside the woven beads on faux leather cord and finished with a sliding bead closure.

Women artisans strip and dry the iraca leaves, split them into fine strands, and wrap them tightly around wooden cores. Because every bead is wound and strung by hand, no two necklaces fall in exactly the same pattern.
