Two chains strung with fabric-wrapped beads in coral, moss, cream and deep red run beside two plain gold-tone chains. The four layers graduate down the neckline, anchored at two points by hammered gold discs.

  • Material: Recycled sari fabric on recycled wood cores
  • Color: Multicolor on gold-tone
  • Length: 21 in, adjustable extension
  • Origin: India
  • Metal: Brass and copper

The alternation of beaded and plain chain keeps each layer legible instead of blending into one busy strand. Every bead carries a different slice of pattern, so the color reads as loose and improvisational rather than repeating across the four rows.

Each bead is wrapped by hand from a different scrap of reclaimed sari fabric, so the color placement and pattern on every necklace is unique.

The Story

The beads start as offcuts of sari fabric — the printed cotton and silk worn as everyday and ceremonial dress across India. Rather than discarded, the scraps are wound around a small wood core and bound tightly, turning cloth waste into a durable, wearable bead.

No two beads carry the same slice of pattern, since each is cut from a different part of a used sari. Strung across four chains, the result reads as loose color placement rather than a repeating print — a small record of the particular saris that were upcycled to make one necklace.

The hammered discs are a simpler, complementary craft: sheet brass struck by hand to catch light unevenly, paired here with the textile beadwork for contrast in texture and finish.

Craft & Care
  • Technique: Recycled sari-fabric beadwork

Keep the fabric-wrapped beads away from water, perfume and lotion. Store the necklace flat or hanging so the textile beads don't crush.

Questions

How long is it?

Approximately 21 in, with an adjustable extension chain at the clasp.

What are the beads made from?

Each bead is a small wood core hand-wrapped in strips of reclaimed sari fabric, so the colors and patterns vary from bead to bead.

Will my necklace look exactly like the photo?

Not exactly. Because the beads are cut from different pieces of reused sari fabric, the color mix on your necklace will be one of a kind.

How should I care for it?

Avoid water, perfume and lotion on the fabric beads, and store the necklace flat or hanging so the layers don't tangle or crush.

Is this necklace fairtrade?

Yes. It is handmade in India under fairtrade practices that support the artisans who make it.
