The Story

Kantha is a hand-stitching tradition from West Bengal, spanning India and Bangladesh, in which layers of worn cotton sari and dhoti fabric are joined with rows of simple running stitch. What began as a way to extend the life of used cloth grew into a recognized textile art, prized for the texture that builds up when many layers are stitched together.

Here, that same instinct carries into jewelry. Strips of recycled cotton are wound tightly around bead cores, layer over layer, until the surface builds up the mottled black, cream, and marbled patterning. No two beads wrap identically, so the sequence along any single strand is unrepeatable.

The wrapped beads are then strung by hand into graduated strands, spaced with small brass beads and finished with a brass clasp and extender chain — every step done with fabric and thread rather than machinery.
